Costumes: Costume Performing
June 23, 2008 – 11:34 amMascot costume performing can be a great deal of fun, but it can also be very dangerous. As someone who has participated in several performances dressed in mascot costumes, I would like to take this opportunity to offer some advice on performance safety. It is my hope that after reading the following information, you will know just what to do to make your next costume performance a safe one.
Costume Performing Safety Tips:
Regardless of how experienced you are as a mascot performer, there is always the chance that things will go wrong. One problem that I have frequently experienced is unexpected audience participation. There have been many cases in which I have been hit, pushed, and tripped by patrons while in my costume. When this happens, it is important to remain clam and alert the proper authorities.
Another problem of which you should be aware is heat exhaustion. Wearing a mascot costume can be excruciating (especially when its hot outside). If you are performing and begin to feel dizzy and/or nauseous, leave the stage area immediately and seek medical assistance. Heat exhaustion is no laughing matter and should not be taken lightly.
Costume performing can be a great deal of fun, but it is not without its perils.
